This bursary was
created following the untimely death of Bernard Crawforth in
September 2004.
Bernard’s contribution to the Abraham Darby School was vast,
whether seen or unseen, and so it was natural that something be
done as a memorial to Bernard, and it is fitting that it should
benefit young people in their pursuit of music in a practical
way, just as he always did.
Bernard
contributed to many communities through singing, bamboo pipes
and his music; involving anyone who wanted to join in, no matter
what their ability. He taught his pupils the value of music in
the community and carol singing with Bernard was a joy to all
that ever went over all the years that he did it. Bernard taught
science at the Abraham Darby School in the early days and then
extended his extra-curricular music becoming a music teacher and
then Deputy Head before his retirement, after which he became a
supply teacher.
The Bernard Crawforth Memorial Bursary was set up initially with the
proceeds from the dissolution of the Telford Bamboo Pipe Club,
Bernard’s creation and great passion. The craft of
bamboo pipe making, playing the pipes and membership of the
Piper’s Guild
was an important part of his life.
It is hoped that the fund
will help many young people in their pursuit of a music
education.
